Short Bio

In 1994, Carl Winsløw got his PhD in mathematics at the University of Tokyo (Japan), specializing in von Neumann algebra theory. From there, he was hired as assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark). Prompted by his experiences with lecturing to undergraduate mathematics students, he began to investigate fundamental problems related to the teaching and learning of mathematics, inspired in particular by the research programmes founded by ICMI-medalists Guy Brousseau and Yves Chevallard. His research had continued along these lines, focusing mainly on university mathematics education, mathematics teacher knowledge, and foundations of didactics. In 2003, Winsløw was appointed to the first full professorship in Didactics of Mathematics ever established at the University of Copenhagen. From this starting point, a thriving new department (IND) has developed at the Faculty of Science, with presently 35 tenured researchers in didactics, pedagogy and philosophy of science. Winsløw has served in various managerial positions both at department and faculty level. He has also assumed several responsibilities at the international level, lately (from 2021) as president of the European society for Research in Mathematics Education (ERME). His Copenhagen research group in Didactics of Mathematics is a northern European hub for research in this area, attracting visitors and graduale students from all over the world.
